Day One
The first stop is always coffee.
The last this time is Maryland.
In between are interstates and
transubstantiation of souls
from employment to vacation—
over the Tappan Zee!
although there’s always a glitch
in Jersey: eight miles in one hour...
But Delaware is inevitable
like fast food and the occasional
rest stop. To the mar!
—of Delmarva.
Where Day’s Inn is a nightmare—
but three Coronas and a minor eclipse
calms the undomesticated smoke.
A final diversion—
we catch The Wedding Crashers
then grab our forty winks.

What can I say, other than you've caught the sense of setting out on the road on "vacation" with precise and evokative detail.
