The Science of the Solstice Poem

In some ways the summer solstice makes me miserable. From January to June, I know the sun is rising in the sky, the days are getting longer, and life is increasing. But come the solstice, I understand the opposite. So why think of it at all.
The Astrometry of Summer

He thought of the summer
solstice not
at all, but if
he did, he’d reason

it a tipping
point, like too
many tequilas
downed the night

before. So summer
suffers some passionate
hangover lasting
far beyond

the actual
experience.
And love, he'd learned,
leans likewise.

~Son Rivers 2005
I need to think like Son Rivers at all times.
