Have you tried the apple uglies at the Orange Blossom (Buxton)? Recommended. Get the fried ones, not the baked ones.

We're leaving tomorrow for OBX. We go every year for a long weekend in April for the Powwow but we actually are taking a whole week this time. We have found most of the things on your list but I'm real anxious to try out the rest. My absolute favorite part of the trip is waking up every morning and going to get the absolutely awesome melt in your mouth Apple Uglies at the Orange Blossom Cafe in Buxton! Wow! For all of the incredibly fun things we have done, your list just made my day! Can't wait to get there! The Indian Museum in Frisco is incredible. The people are so nice. The ferry ride to Ockracoke is awesome. Howards Pub (Ocracoke) has phenominal food! Now, if I could just find someone that made down home hushpuppies. Thanks again for the list. Many of the superb things you have listed here are what prompted me to move from Arizona to the Outer Banks. I have been to, used the services of, or eaten at most of the places on this list and you’re right. The Outer Banks does things better than most other places. I had a friend who came out here to visit me and now he wants to move here as well.
