The Daily Poetry Show: Saturday's Child

Becoming American by Vern Rutsala
It’s hard to dislike this poem. The story is a gripping one. And the language is tough and imaginative. At worse, some of the line breaks are questionable. But most of the time, they work. And the ending walks a fine line between sentimental and haunting. And remains standing strong at the end.

Red and Black Days by Robin Behn
It’s hard to like this poem. Too cute for its own good at times, it stretches out that third stanza with meaningless play. But being that’s part of the point here, I looked the other way. And came to understand the childish nature of the story and the awful point it makes.
