Needleman's Three Hearts: 2-Mystical Love

Mystical love, or religious love, may be defined as the caring for the inward-directed, or internal, aspects of human nature. But such love often ignores or denies the physical and emotional desires of the other and therefore communicates an ideal of inner perfection with no practical means of leading the other to the attainment of that ideal. The result is a form of communication that encourages religious fantasies which, when combined with the volatile and repressed energies of sexuality and emotion and with the automatisms of the isolated intellect, may lead to social and personal disintegration.
